The presentations delivered at the Surface Convention by the experts from Homag (www.homag.de) illustrated the many different aspects to be taken into consideration for the achievement of a top quality surface finish.
After a grounding on the subjects of surface coating in continuous operation and coating using high-gloss materials, a presentation introducing the Homag Group’s “completeLine” got down to some fascinating detail. “completeLine” is the jointless process solution for the simultaneous coating of surfaces and longitudinal edges. After edge profiling, this process entails edge improvement using adhesive or alternatively the application of a dummy edge. The next stage is double-sided coating of the surfaces, after which the narrow surface of the longitudinal edge is wrapped.
This innovative process has secured Homag Group member Friz Kaschiertechnik GmbH, the driving force behind innovation in the field of lamination technology worldwide, a decisive edge in terms of competence over its competitors.
This presentation concluded with a look at future developments on the horizon for the “completeLine” series, such as the use of formaldehyde-free urea adhesives, further automation of nozzle technology or laser technology for paper trimming.
As well as demonstrating the benefits in principle of jointless three-sided coating and laminating, the necessary requirements in terms of material input were explained. This focused on the distinction between the three different adhesive types urea, Pvac and hot melt used for lamination. This is an important aspect given that the different process combinations have to be adjusted to the product being manufactured.
A perfectly coordinated modular system enables the Homag Group to ideally satisfy wide-ranging different lamination requirements. Tried and tested engineering, seamless component technology and a high degree of reusabilityare only three of many decisive areas in which the company scores points with customers. Examples of plant concepts for high-gloss lamination of fronts and backs were used to illustrate the successful interaction of the different components, and the specialist visitors to the Convention also had the chance to observe a highlight in the form of a high-gloss laminating plant in operation.
Other presentations during the Surface Convention dealt with the whole production environment, further finishing processes and finally also packaging.
