A new edition of the “Caiazza Memorial Challenge”, the competition for young architects, designers and students under 35 years of age from all over the world, awarding the most original, innovative and high-quality seat designs, provided they can be technically implemented and mass-produced. In 2011 the call launched by Udine Chamber of Commerce with Promosedia, includes several new features aimed at enhancing the link with the chair sector, which is having to face the challenges of internationalization and manufacturing diversification. Among the new features, the most important deals with the types of designs, which will be divided into two categories: chairs in a narrow sense (with or without armrest) and seats (armchairs, small armchairs, small sofas, chaise longues, stools, etc). Entries will have to be sent by 18 January 2012.
Participants have to design a seat with special focus on materials and making a remarkable use of wood. Furthermore they will have to put forward original works, specifically created for the competition. The object’s intended use (residential or contract) will have to be declared and single, as well as group participations will be accepted. The panel of judges includes experts, journalists and institutional representatives.

On 14 April, during the participation of Udine Chamber of Commerce in the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, awards for the 2010 Promosedia International Design Competition -Caiazza Memorial Challenge have been presented before authorities. Four designs received a mention and three were presented an award: “Fly chair” designed by Studio Associato Orefice-Benaglia from Milan; “WCH10S Stacking Chair” of the architect Roberta Capovilla from Padua; “Nokl”, a seat designed by the German students Caroline Perret and Friederike Daumiller.
The exhibition of the three selected prototypes was the background of the award ceremony. The judges also awarded four mentions to Daniele Locati for model A593A4 – Bristol; Davide Scomparin for Liqood chair; Simone Simonelli for Mossa; Stefano Vaccari for Lamè.
