“CT scanning” of whole logs in order to recognize wood defects in a reliable way increases the value of sawmill products by an average of eight percent. The 2016 Marcus Wallenberg Prize goes to Alexander Katsevich and Federico Giudiceandrea for the development of this groundbreaking technology.
The Marcus Wallenberg Prize for outstanding scientific achievements in the wood processing industry has been consigned by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden during the award ceremony. Along with mathematician Alexander Katsevich, visionary entrepreneur Federico Giudiceandrea has received this important award.
A great honor for Microtec Ceo Giudiceandrea, whose company sells high-tech scanners and optimization systems for the wood processing industry and is considered a leader in its field.
“I am overwhelmed by this honor and would like to thank the foundation for this award. The groundbreaking possibilities created by the “CT Log” in the woodworking industry are most likely the greatest achievement in my career as entrepreneur”, says the deeply moved laureate.
“The introduction of this new technology marks the beginning of a new era for the sawmill industry. The groundbreaking research and innovative implementation have opened new horizons, facilitating further optimization of the sawing process”, says Marcus Wallenberg, chairman of the board of the Marcus Wallenberg Prize.
The purpose of the Marcus Wallenberg Prize is to recognize, encourage and stimulate pathbreaking scientific achievements, which contribute significantly to broadening knowledge and to technical development within the fields of importance to forestry and forest industries. The Marcus Wallenberg Price is an international price of SEK 2 million, instituted by Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB – now Stora Enso – in 1980 to commemorate the services rendered by Dr. Marcus Wallenberg during his long term as member and chairman of the Board of Directors. It is the 33rd anniversary of the award.
The award annually honors the scientific breakthrough of a scientist or a group of cooperating scientists in the wood processing industry.
According to the Selection Committee and the Board of Directors, the selected Microtec “CT Log” scanner will have a significant impact on the industry.
