As reported by VDM, the association of the German furniture industry, 2021 is showing strongly positive numbers. In fact, exports of German furniture recorded an overall increase of 17 percent, exceeding 6.2 billion euros in September.
A growth that, as reported by Jan Kurth, the association’s managing director, has exceeded all expectations and was recorded in all sectors, from the kitchen (up 19.6 percent) to upholstered furniture (up 15 percent) , not only compared to 2020, but also compared to the pre-pandemic 2019 (the increase compared to 2019 is 10 percent).
In terms of exports, the country that has had the greatest growth for German furniture is France, with an increase of 30.7 percent (over 1 billion euros) in the first three quarters. Strong growth also for Russia (9 per cent), the United Kingdom (plus 21.3 per cent), Spain (plus 22.8 per cent) and Italy (20.5 percent).
Positive numbers, although clearly less marked, also for destinations outside Europe. In the US, the increases were 7 percent, while in China they were 2 percent.
Furniture imports are also on the rise, with an increase of 18.8 per cent and a turnover of approximately 7.4 billion euros. Among the supplier countries, China remains in first place, with an increase of more than 40 percent compared to the same period last year.
