Two new drilling solutions were introduced at the opposite ends of the portfolio offered by the Italian group.
A clear choice: “morbidelli pwx500” was created to step up by one more level in the range of inline drilling machines offering high productivity, without forgetting those who prefer more compact solutions for “batch one” operations, covered by the brand new “morbidelli cx110”.
“Market demand fits in between two extremes: at one end, high productivity levels per working shift, at the opposite end, highly flexible operations for individual batches”, said Bruno Di Napoli, Business Unit Manager for machining centers and drilling solutions at SCM.
“Our drilling machines are designed to uncompromisingly meet the requirements of handicraft businesses and big furniture makers. Now we can say we have a range of products for all needs, with new solutions offering top performance at very competitive prices”.
A clear statement…
“Definitely. We decided to offer a top-of-range solution that exceeds standard productivity levels per shift with large and medium batches, and an entry-level drilling machine that combines performance and investment. Two solutions with the same quality, stemming from our decision to prove that today SCM offers the same technology for both solutions, obviously with different performance.
This is a challenge we have won, adding two new machines at the opposite ends of our range, that was already extensive and clearly defined.
The “morbidelli cx110” was designed with a very flexible concept, offering productivity up to 400 parts per shift, so an ideal solution for small and medium handicraft businesses, as well as for bigger organizations that want to deal with custom products or some reworking operations, and are looking for a compact, versatile and efficient solution.
“morbidelli pwx500” is targeted to big furniture industries and subcontractors looking for connected and integrated drilling solutions, offering high-speed without compromising on finishing quality and accuracy. We worked to ensure the highest levels of uptime, with a set of solutions designed for machines operating on three shifts… I can mention the integrated suction system in the drilling hears ensuring optimal panel cleaning and avoiding possible damage even in high panel stacks; at the same time, we can keep temperature below 50 degrees instead of 80, thus extending the life of the spindle”.
“I must add that the greatest satisfaction has come from software. Machines are no longer the core element. Their quality, effectiveness and reliability are taken for granted. Think about the car business, for instance: we sit into the driver’s seat, but we don’t care what’s under the hood. The same is happening and will happen more and more with wood-furniture technology, where the operator interacts (through a control panel) with software that streamlines any operation.
With our drilling machines, you can import a 3D object to acquire the operations to be executed, the required tools, the location of holes… The machine is equipped with drilling heads and tools, it can store hundreds of programs to operate for a month unattended, generating optimized working cycles and strongly reducing “downtime”, which is normally very significant in drilling machines, as you must change settings and tooling for each job. The software plays a key role here: therefore, our machine integrates the new drillinjg program “Maestro 3Drill”, a “package” that brings many benefits of numerical control machining centers to the drilling machine, such as 3D model import as mentioned above”.
Is innovation getting harder than in the past?
“Let’s say it’s more and more complex, especially in mature businesses like drilling.
In the SCM area I am in charge for, i.e. machining and drilling centers, we have committed to introducing one significant innovation every year. With a long tradition of collaboration with industry leaders, our team can get experiences and customer requests that often guide us to new ideas.
With these ideas, drilling is no longer the bottleneck that big or small furniture makers had to deal with every day. The machines must adapt to a challenging process, often working on three shifts, with the necessity to prevent possible downtime, because when you must handle up to 20 parts per minute, you have a big problem if you cannot guarantee the highest reliability.
In the past, drilling normally involved batches of few hundred pieces, up to two, five or ten thousand panels, all the same size. Today, it’s all about flexibility, diversification, customization, and if a manufacturer wants to make 500 or 1,000 pieces per shift, all different from each other, performance requirements are extreme. This is where innovation comes in, this is where the challenge gets tougher and more exciting. And if you add that drilling accounts for 15 percent of SCM total revenues, it is clear that our dedication is strong and at the same time gratifying”.
“Let me mention another key element: today we are offering much more “content”, equipping machines of different size with the same technology. This is probably the most significant result of an innovation process, the goal we pursue with each new proposal: providing better tools that can be afforded by more and more companies willing to grow and progress”.

SCM’S NEW “DIGITAL HOME”
The “Grand Opening” of the new Technology Center in Rimini is scheduled next September 28-30, an opportunity to see how SCM’ technological and digital innovation can support customers in their own business.
The new Technology Center is part of the expansion and renovation project of the Rimini headquarters, a 4-thousand-square-meter facility that will host the new digital innovation structure for woodworking and furniture production.
The event will showcase the latest solutions developed by the group, which combine strong technological expertise for the production of solutions for furniture, doors and windows, wood constructions and carpentry, with the development of software and services, to support customers through all the stages of their production process.
