“The approval of Amendment 414 to the Packaging Regulation is good news for the recycling and wood packaging supply chain and rewards the work done as FederlegnoArredo together with European trade associations to defend a virtuous supply chain and sector. This vote puts an end to an initial distortion introduced, in the ENVI Commission, by the classification of high quality recycling, according to which wood packaging transformed into chipboard, would not have been considered high quality recycling“. FederlegnoArredo said in a note following the vote in Strasbourg on the European packaging directive.
“Instead, our proposal states that a recycling action is defined as high quality when it generates material of sufficient quality to replace the starting raw materials that can be reintroduced into the supply chain, even for purposes other than the packaging from which it derives. This is a really important result – FederlegnoArredo continues – that makes it possible to preserve the sustainability of wood packaging, including wooden crates and industrial packaging, reaffirming that the quality of recycling is linked to the environmental benefit it generates, and not to maintaining the same use“.
