Italian furniture sector moves toward circular economy with new EPR agreement

One year after the announcement of the initiative and six months after its establishment, the Consorzio Nazionale Sistema Arredo (CNSA), promoted by FederlegnoArredo, continues to grow, now counting 26 founding companies with a combined turnover of over €2.5 billion.

The CNSA was created in response to the new EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and anticipates the possible introduction of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for furniture in Europe. From the outset, the project has aimed to turn regulatory evolution into an opportunity for innovation and sustainable growth in the sector.

During the Salone del Mobile.Milano, an official agreement was signed between CNSA, FederlegnoArredo, and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE), marking the launch of a test phase to explore the implementation of an EPR system for furniture. The pilot will include targeted waste stream analyses in four major cities—Milan, Treviso, Naples, and Bari—and consultation with national stakeholders across the supply chain.

“This agreement is a concrete step forward towards a pioneering EPR model in one of Italy’s key industrial sectors,” said Deputy Minister Vannia Gava. “It demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.”

Claudio Feltrin, President of FederlegnoArredo and CNSA, highlighted the strategic importance of the agreement: “This is not only a source of pride but a necessary step for a more sustainable, circular future. Our industry is ready to lead the way.”

Maria Porro, President of Assarredo and CNSA Board Member, emphasized the need for tailored strategies: “This is a pivotal opportunity to transform end-of-life management for furniture into a driver of innovation.”

The agreement was also welcomed by ANCI President Gaetano Manfredi, who praised the collaboration as aligned with municipalities’ goals to improve urban waste management and promote material recovery.
