Sustainability is not just a word, but a real mantra at Cursal, the company based in San Fior near Treviso, Italy, for over 45 years specializing in wood crosscut saws with automated loading and unloading. Safeguarding the environment is an indisputable mission for the company. “For many years – said manager Consuelo Curtolo – Cursal has been investing to reduce waste and promote clean and renewable energy”.
How do you approach sustainability at Cursal?
“We currently produce 93 percent of our energy consumption in house using a next-generation solar plant. All the premises are climate conditioned using solar energy. Furthermore, the energy we purchase comes from vendors who use 100 percent of renewable sources.
At Cursal, we normally drink water from the tap, dispensed through a filtering, cooling and carbonating system, we all know the environmental impact of plastic bottles”.
Sustainability also means waste reduction…
“We have always adopted a strict waste reduction policy, with 75 percent of packaging materials recycled. Cursal also buys thermal and chemical treatments only from qualified companies, thus ensuring environmentally responsible production operations.
Not only. A significant portion of production waste is divided into twelve categories and sold to reclaim raw materials, including wood, copper, aluminum, paper, plastics, batteries, lamps and much more.
We have adopted a sustainable lighting policy, aimed at using led lights exclusively. What’s the ultimate goal? Achieving one hundred percent”.
…this also implies attention to design and engineering…
“Exactly! Product engineering is focused on the reduction of noise, eliminating the need for individual protection equipment and helping create a healthier working environment. Modular design allows to replace outdates parts only, rather than replacing an entire crosscut saw. With sophisticated optimization software, cutting wood is now more efficient than ever, reducing waste from 15 to 3 percent depending on the material and the sector.
Many of our lines feature components that improve the air quality in the working areas, such as the oil separator/silencing unit that recovers oil from valves and cylinders, avoiding its dispersion, and the differential pressure gauge that prevents the emission and inhalation of toxic dust”.
“Cursal – Consuelo Curtolo concluded – is not just about quality crosscut saws, we also have a future-oriented mindset with a green and sustainable approach to the woodworking machinery business”.
Because green is not just a color, but a different “state of mind”.
