Record attendance for the 13th European symposium on wood-based panels, organized by Epf and Fraunhofer Wki, was attended by a record 375 delegates from more than 30 countries.
The event focused on the hot topics of the moment: sustainability, artificial intelligence, recycling, and cutting-edge technologies critical to the future of the industry. During the days of the symposium, the need emerged to develop a “building offensive” that responds to market needs, offering accessible products that combine affordability and quality. At the same time, it was stressed how important it is for the industry to present itself as a single voice to effectively respond to growing demand.
Another major theme was innovation in the recycling of mdf panels. New techniques in this area offer a real opportunity for Europe to contribute to carbon storage. One notable example is Japan, where 20 percent of panels are recycled each year. This experience demonstrates the potential of recycling techniques in the European context as well, providing a virtuous model for sustainable materials management.
Artificial intelligence played a central role in the discussions, being recognized as a technology already well integrated into the industry’sprocess engineering. Speakers emphasized how AI is a concrete and established reality, capable of improving production efficiency and finished product quality through automation and process optimization.
On the innovation front, Europe is confirmed in a leading position for the development of advanced solutions in wood-based panels. In particular, the focus is on resins, waxes and additives, which are evolving to respond flexibly and rapidly to new market needs. This European leadership in technological innovations is a key element in the industry’s global competitiveness.
Finally, a particularly strong concern is sustainability. The wood-based panel industry plays an important role in contributing to ecological development, but less regulatory burden and more political support are needed to realize its full potential. The ability to develop a more agile regulatory framework would enable the industry to maximize its positive impact on society and the environment.
In addition to expert presentations, the symposium featured an exhibition space where companies presented cutting-edge technologies through interactive booths and posters. Among the participants, several leading companies showcased their latest innovations, providing a comprehensive overview of emerging technologies and advanced solutions. This space provided a unique opportunity for experts to discuss and share knowledge on the advances that are transforming the industry.
The next event will be held October 14-16, 2026, as in 2024 at the Grand Elysée Hotel in Hamburg.
